Pilates - Only For The Rich & Famous?
Jan 26, 2020
Recently one of my clients of 10 years was running late for her session as she dealt with an urgent phone call from her brother about a family issue. Finally, she told him she really had to go as she should have been at Pilates 10 minutes ago. "Pilates?!" he said Isn't that only for the rich and famous!?
'No! Definitely not!" she said. It was so funny to hear her say that, as this was a commonly held belief several years ago and after some quick checks, a myth that is alive and well. So why does Pilates have this reputation, and how much truth is in this belief? Here are some of the reasons why the Pilates method of exercise came to be associated with the celebrity lifestyle and why it was originally designed for everyday people to enjoy its life-changing benefits.
Which Celebrities Practice Pilates?
The list of well-known people who are adopting a Pilates lifestyle is continually growing and recently in the media, we have seen images of Adele's dramatic body transformation. Among other modalities, Pilates has been credited to have played an important role in the singer's new regime and as someone who wasn't a fan of exercise, something that she has evidently found to be a user-friendly way of maintaining her fitness. Jennifer Aniston, Miranda Kerr and Lady Gaga are all reportedly devotees. In the sports world, Tiger Woods, Andy Murray and Lebron James practice Pilates while David Beckham is said to do a 1 hour Pilates session daily to maintain his peak form.
Why Do Celebrities Choose Pilates?
One of the features of Pilates is that it can so easily be tailored to each person's individual fitness requirements and goals which makes it just as useful for a world number one tennis player as it is for an actor preparing for a role in a feature film. Pilates is just as effective for strengthening and toning the inner muscles of the core or the abdominals as it is for strengthening and toning the outer muscles. For this reason, it is popular with models who want a lean, toned look as opposed to a bulky look that can sometimes result from gym training. Pilates is also a secret weapon for some elite sportspeople who practice Pilates to gain the edge on their competitors but want this information to be kept confidential and I have personally taught athletes where this has been the case. After all, in the world of competitive sport if you were onto something that allowed you to perform streets ahead of your competitors, that they hadn't discovered yet, would you really want to tell them what it was?
