“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” ― Martin Luther King Jr

Most of us don't have much control over the current world health crisis which has restricted our former way of life.  We can, however, control how we react to these changes and ensure that we are still moving forward and focusing on the new possibilities that are available to us during this time.  One of my clients of more than 13 years, who commenced Skype Pilates sessions straight away during lockdown said she was keen to keep up her Pilates training and was looking forward to being challenged in a different way.  Four weeks later, it has been amazing to see just how much she can achieve in a 30 min session.  In addition, I suggest which videos on JS Mind Body Pilates Online she should practice between sessions and she is not only maintaining her fitness but being challenged in a completely different way while increasing her strength and flexibility and she feels great.
No-one knows when life is going to return to normal but just because it feels like everything has ground to a halt, it doesn't mean you have to stop making progress too.  In my last Blog post, Living In Lockdown? Pilates To The Rescue I discussed making movement a priority and offered some tips on how to maintain a positive mental state at this time.  What else can we do to complement our Pilates training?

Have A Great Nights Sleep
From personal experience,  I know how tempting it is to stay up all night binge-watching your way through Netflix, but this is really going to negatively impact your health and well-being.  Lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, compromise your brain function so you can't think straight and has even been linked to causing car accidents.  Sleep deprivation may also increase your risk of developing heart problems, certain cancers and diabetes.  You don't want to undo all the great work you are doing with Pilates and movement by neglecting sleep.  If you are having trouble sleeping make sure you allow adequate time to wind down before bed.  Try some relaxation such as my Guided Relaxation Session "Preparing for a Peaceful Night's Sleep",  which you can access when you take the free 10 day trial for my site JS Mind Body Pilates Online.  Establishing and maintaining good sleep patterns are well worth the effort and vital for your health.

Have A Healthy, Balanced Diet
Spending so much time at home means hopefully meals are not as rushed and we can pay more attention to ensuring we are having the most nutritious diet possible.  As soothing as it is to reach for the comfort food in uncertain times,  for the sake of maintaining a healthy immune system and preventing disease,  it's worth reviewing your current diet to ensure you have a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables while reducing your consumption of processed foods.  If you have space on a balcony or backyard, consider growing some vegetables or even herbs, which are a great addition to many meals.  Now is the ideal time to put into practice all your good intentions around food, sleep and maintaining your health and fitness through Pilates.  We don't know how long we will be staying at home, so with some creativity and discipline, we can all emerge from this situation, stronger, healthier and more well-rested than when we went in!
