Three Uncomfortable Truths To Consider

I am consider the uncomfortable truths

If you have been reading my blog since I started writing it back in 2018, you know I don't believe in quick fixes.  Over my 20 plus years as a Pilates practitioner, I have had the honour of assisting hundreds of people to overcome chronic pain through Pilates, who then go on to achieve goals many thought were out of their reach. Some of my clients have been working with me for 5, 15, or even 20 years. Because we have built that trust, I can be completely honest with you.  When it comes to successfully overcoming chronic pain and ageing well, being intentional about what you want your later years to be like is vital. Sometimes, we need to face the facts about our health, our habits, and our future. Here are three uncomfortable truths we all need to consider if we want to live pain-free, vibrant lives as we age.

1.  Alcohol Causes Cancer - And It Stalls Your Healing

We live in a culture that treats alcohol as a reward, a stress-reliever, and a normal part of socializing. But the hard, scientific truth is that alcohol is a known carcinogen. Beyond the long-term cancer risk, alcohol is also a powerful inflammatory agent. If you are dealing with chronic joint pain, back issues, or systemic inflammation, drinking alcohol is like pouring petrol on a fire. It disrupts your sleep, slows down tissue repair, and actively sabotages the work you do on the Pilates mat. Ageing well requires us to look honestly at what we put into our bodies.

2. While It Is Never Too Late To Begin, Starting Sooner Is Always Better

I hear it all the time: "I’ll start Pilates when my back feels better," or "I’m too old/stiff to start now." Let me be clear: it is never too late to start. I have seen incredible transformations in clients who didn't discover Pilates until their 60s or 70s. However, the sooner you start building core stability, spinal mobility, and muscle density, the more options you give your future self. Do not wait for a crisis—like a severe diagnosis, a fall, or debilitating pain—to force your hand.  Prevention is infinitely easier than rehabilitation. The best time to start was ten years ago; the second best time is today.

3. You Cannot Outsource Your Longevity To A Practitioner

As an instructor, nothing brings me more joy than guiding someone out of pain. But here is the ultimate truth: I cannot fix you. Only you can do that. No personal trainer, physiotherapist, or Pilates instructor possesses a magic wand. If you attend Pilates sessions sporadically, you won't see the results you are looking for. Alternatively, if you do an hour of Pilates each week but return to the same harmful movement patterns, poor posture, and sedentary habits for the other 167 hours of the week, your progress will stall. Longevity requires your active participation. It means taking the awareness you learn in the studio and applying it to how you sit at your desk, how you pick up your groceries, and how you care for your body daily. A practitioner is your guide, but you are the driver.
