Small Moments, Lasting Change: The Power of 5-Minute Pilates Habits
Apr 06, 2026
Recently, one of my lovely clients was having difficulty staying consistent with her usual twice-weekly Pilates sessions, following videos on my on-demand website. Working full-time and dealing with personal issues meant that Pilates was taking a back seat. This was causing her stress as she had overcome her back pain through Pilates and wanted to maintain her regular practice as she aged. She came up with the idea of committing to one exercise per day during February. It worked! She successfully did this, so she increased it to 2 exercises per day in March, and again, this was manageable and boosted her confidence enormously. My client discovered this for herself, but as many of you know from my previous posts, I'm a huge advocate for small, daily doses of Pilates for pain-free living and ageing well. Let's look at how small Pilates sessions can directly benefit you.
Pilates Is Not "All Or Nothing"
Like my client, when life feels full and time is limited, it’s easy to believe that if you can’t fit in a full Pilates session, it’s not worth doing anything at all. This all-or-nothing thinking is one of the most common barriers I see, especially among people who are already managing busy schedules, work demands, or caring responsibilities. The truth is, your body doesn’t require long, perfect sessions to benefit. It responds to consistency, even in the smallest doses. Every little session of Pilates, even one exercise, is going to add up and produce results. My client thought beyond the "all or nothing" mindset and realised something was better than nothing, and successfully put this into practice. She said even on a bad day, she can manage 10 squats. Adopt this mindset for yourself and see for yourself the results that regular, consistent practice can produce.
Start Small - Maybe You Can Do More?
One method I use myself, and I know several of my clients do too, is just to start. Maybe you tell yourself you are going to do 1 or 2 exercises, and before you know it, you have done 15, 20 or 30 minutes of Pilates. Obviously, this is not for you if you are on a strict time constrainst but even if you are, even 1 more exercise than you had planned, all contributes to your overall health and well-being. Beginning with the mindset of starting and seeing where the session takes you is a valuable tool in increasing your body awareness by listening to your body. Some days 1 exercise is all you need, but on other days, your body may need more therapeutic movement. The more attuned you are to your body's needs, the more finely-tuned your awareness will become, which is just one of the enormous benefits of Pilates.
JS Mind Body Pilates Online - My On-Demand Website
Pilates was never meant to be about pushing harder or doing more for the sake of it. It’s about precision, awareness, and working with your body rather than against it. When you shift your mindset to value small, consistent efforts, you not only make movement more accessible, you also build a foundation that can help you overcome chronic pain and prevent further pain or injury as you age. I created my on-demand website to help you overcome pain and injury in the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you. The majority of the videos are 10 mins in length, making them easy to fit into your daily schedule. It's also highly affordable at 20 AUD per month, making it the ideal way to learn Pilates in a cost-of-living crisis
