Don’t Settle—Demand the Right Medical Care Now
May 04, 2025
Tragically, there have been recent reports in the media of two separate cases of a toddler and a newborn baby dying in a Sydney hospital due to medical negligence. The heartbreak these parents have experienced will last a lifetime, and their grief is compounded by the fact that their deaths were entirely preventable. In the first case, the toddler was incorrectly triaged in the emergency department, which was understaffed at the time due to industrial action. The seriousness of his condition went undetected until it was too late.. In the second case, a delayed emergency C-section caused the death of the newborn baby as the operating theatre wasn't available, as it functioned on an "on-call" basis. The hospital was also negligent in picking up that an emergency C-section was needed, until, again, it was almost too late. The baby survived the birth but tragically died the next day.
In 2025, in Sydney, Australia, this is unacceptable and outrageous. It has never been more important to ensure you get the appropriate medical care for yourself and your loved ones. Recently, I've had several clients who have had to fight very hard to get the care they needed. You have to be your own advocate and ideally have a loved one act as your advocate if you are in hospital or incapacitated in any way. The modern health system is difficult to navigate and you need to be ready to demand the care you need and deserve.
Shop Around For The Right Doctor
Choose a doctor who listens and takes your concerns seriously. A good GP is worth their weight in gold. Unfortunately, many of the good ones close their books to new patients, but don't let this stop you. There are still very good ones out there, you just need to find one. Don't hesitate to switch if you’re not getting the care, attention, or results you need. Keep looking until you find someone who truly supports your health journey. Sticking with the wrong doctor not only wastes precious time, but it could also put your health at serious risk.
Get The Right Tests Without Delay
Whether you need blood tests, X-rays, or scans, unless there’s a solid medical reason to wait, push for immediate diagnostics. Delaying tests can cost you valuable time and potentially delay critical treatment.
No One Knows Your Body Better Than You Do
Speak up—your voice matters. I'm not a naturally pushy person, but this is one area where I will question and push for what I think is necessary. If something doesn’t feel right or you suspect what’s wrong, trust your instincts and push for answers. Insist on being tested and taken seriously—you have every right to advocate for your own health.
Take Control Of Your Treatment By Staying Informed
Always research the medications you're prescribed. We are fortunate to have medical information at our fingertips with the internet—use it. Look up how the medication works, its side effects, possible interactions, and what other patients have experienced. This knowledge helps you make informed decisions and ensures your treatment truly fits your condition.
Get The Most Out Of Your Medical Appointments
If your condition is complex or you’re seeing a specialist, write down your questions beforehand. Don’t hesitate to take notes or use your phone to record the answers (with permission). When you’re unwell, it’s easy to forget details—having a record ensures you can review everything later. The more informed you are, the better your chances of receiving an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment.
